"Never Thought to Ask"

Found an old home movie I shot at 17
G.I. Joe stop motion I was young and lean
I saw my childhood puppy and that old brown car
My good friend James playing my guitar

He was flying solo and I had never been
Two fearless souls challenging the wind
I watched the faded images flicker out and die
I heard him call me Sphinx, I never knew why

We were just young flying fools
Didn’t have a thing to lose
Always running fast, Life slipping past
I never thought to ask

We spent a year or 2 just hanging out with friends
Then he went off to find a dream and I moved on again
He found what he was looking for in navy jets to fly
Left behind my memory of one day in the sky

The car was sold for scrap, the puppy passed from age
Guitar was crushed one night in a drunken rage
8 years since we angled off That Cessna flying day
At the 10 year reunion I heard he passed away

We were just young flying fools
Didn’t have a thing to lose
Always running fast, Life slipping past
I never thought to ask
Dedicated to James Janzen 1960-1988
